Super simple lip balm

Calendula lip balm

Herbal infused oils makes all the difference in a lip balm.

Lip balm - most likely the first formulation or diy recipe most people make when they dive into making their own products. There are more variations of lip balm recipes than I could possible count. Various formulas have coconut oil, apricot kernel oil, almond oil, various butters including shea, cocoa, mango etc. And you can go totally luxurious with oil based hyaluronic acid, actives to help decrease fine lines around the mouth, plumping active and the list goes on!

While I am all for the luxurious, if you want to whip yourself something that only takes a few minutes, and you only only have a limited range of supplies you can make a lip balm with 3 ingredients that is lovely and nourishing to your lips. If you want to amp this up to something a bit more lux, the simple addition of some herbal infused oils makes all the difference. Here’s the basic formula which will go well in either a pot or a lip tube. I have used and totally love unbleached organic beeswax instead of bleached beeswax pellets. Both would work equally well in the formula in regards to results. The reason for my choice is that unbleached beeswax has a lovely honey like aroma and golden colour that can’t be beat! Your choice entirely.

This formula is in percentages so made with the amounts shown converted to grams will give you 100g of lip balm. Using a spreadsheet or calculator you could batch size this up or down. Wholesale supplies Plus also has a very handy calculator you could use. Link here.

Some Lip balm tips. Don’t skip the vitamin e oil as it will help extend the life of your lip balm. Note its not a preservative but helps to delay oxidation of the plant oils. If you notice that your lip balm starts to taste or smell like old crayons (yuk!) time to toss it out and make a new batch. Best practice is not to make too large a batch unless you’re gifting to friends to avoid this happening especially if you live in a hot and humid climate. If you’re like me and don’t have a steady hand the addition using either a syringe or a plastic pipette can make getting the liquid balm into your tubes a lot easier (and a lot less messier!).

Make and enjoy!!
